Doctor from Jagatsinghpur district in Odisha is now an MP in Kenya

A doctor from the seaside village of Panchupalli under Earasama block of Jagatsinghpur district in Odisha scripted history recently by becoming a member of the Parliament of Kenya after winning the election there.
Dr Swarup Ranjan Mishra, who had contested on a Jubilee party ticket, won the Kesses constituency parliamentary seat in Uasin Gishu County of Kenya. The 52-year-old garnered 23,314 votes against his closest rival Isaac Terer, Uasin Gishu County assembly speaker, who got 5,681 votes. The incumbent James Bett came third with 22,381 votes.

One of the 47 counties of Kenya, Uasin Gishu County is located in the former Rift Valley Province. The city of Eldoret is the county’s administrative and commercial centre.

Dr Swarup had moved to Kenya in 1997 with his wife Pallavi, a gynaecologist. Having lived there for so many years, the couple call Kenya home.
