Bhubaneswar 20th November, 2018: The 1st International Public Art Symposium (IPAS) jointly organized by Artist Network Promoting Indian Culture (ANPIC), Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) & Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) was inaugurated by Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister Odisha, in the presence of Shri Ashok Chandra Panda, Hon’ble Minister Tourism and Odia Language, Literature & Culture, Govt. of Odisha, Dr. Prasanna Kumar Patsani, Hon’ble M.P. (LS) BBSR, Dr. Krishan Kumar, IAS, VC, (BDA), Bhabani Sankar Chayani, Member Enforcement, BDA, Dilip Kumar Majhi Local Councilor, as Guests of Honour, Sashank Mohapatra, Managing Trustee, ANPIC and Khitish Das, Curator, IPAS here at Kalinga Nagar Bhubaneswar.
Gracing the occasion Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister Odisha said, “I wish to congratulate the artists for their wonderful exhibits which have been miraculously made out of junk. I congratulate ANPIC for this great initiative.”
IPAS is the first Open Air Museum Waste to Art in Odisha where artists from across the globe have come and built different types of sculptures out of waste materials. Augusto Daniel Gallo from Argentina has created one of the lions standing back to back in the National Emblem of India out of junk metals. Similarly, Donald Buglass from New Zealand has created a flying eagle out of iron waste, Anita Maria Wilhelmina de Harde from Netherland has created the Royal Bengal Tigress, Sundari, Daniel Pérez Suárez from Spain has created Head of Lord Buddha, Jeetender Kumar Ojha from Baroda, India has created a vanity sculpture symbolizing women empowerment. Similarly Paddy Bloomer from Ireland and MatteoBaroni from Italy have created kinetic sculptures promoting different theories of science. The live sculpturing had continued for 20 days after which the open air sculpture museum themed on ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ is made available to the people of Odisha. The sculpture museum would create awareness amongst people of Odisha on environment, Climate Change and Reuse of Waste Materials etc.
Speaking on the occasion, Sashank Mohapatra, Managing Trustee, ANPIC said, “Art that is not only a delight for the eyes but also sends out a strong social message is the need of the hour. This first Waste to Art Open Air Museum which is going to be a great tourist attraction would also create awareness on various environmental issues such as wildlife conservation.“ “The initiative is also going to boost socio-cultural art in Odisha and would encourage young artists to come up with new ideas” he added.
“This art event is going to be a boost to Odisha Tourism as this Waste to Art museum is first of its kind in Odisha. “ said Khitish Das, Trustee, ANPIC.
The event is envisioned as part of the state’s active involvement in issues of a secular theme and nature through socio-cultural arts. The artworks which are made mainly from waste material and scrap metal has propagated eco-friendly message. Focus has been made on alarming issues like global warming, flood, and also protection of our wildlife species specially which are endangered from natural calamities, road kill, hunting, poaching etc. It has also put a spotlight on species like the Odisha Olive Ridley Turtle, the Indian /Odisha Elephant, the Indian Rhino, the Nilgiri Tahr, the Bengal Tiger, the Blackbuck, Snow Leopard and the Lion-Tailed Macaque to name a few.
