“I think women are foolish to pretend they are equal to men, they are far superior and always have been.” – William Golding, Lord of the Flies
India Surf Festival 2K15 has centralized the theme Girl Power this year. The Festival has always been a destination for unbridled fun-on-the-sea and its promotion of social causes. This year the Festival’s theme is the true need of the hour. The Festival showcases the strength, beauty and the desire of the Woman to be free from the shackles of tradition.
Today, the position of Woman in India is a truly depressing one and in such a scenario, ‘Girl Power’ is a powerful message for change. The basic idea of the ‘Respect Women’ Campaign is so much like listening to a religious sermon- People will listen to it but won’t really follow it. The ‘Fairer Sex’ is superior in every way and yet it finds itself as a second rate citizen who is, in some countries, depressingly, is considered equal to livestock.
But look at the resilience of the woman- it flourishes and blooms like a flower under the aegis of a repressive and bigoted society. The Woman, the Girl has actively carved a niche for itself and today it is giving tough competition to their counterparts and their bloated egos.
That’s Girl Power for you- Deflating Male Egos and Creating a New World Order. Girl Power, which is the India Surfing Festival’s Motto for this season is considering the irreplaceable role that girls are playing behind the scenes.
A group of fiercely Independent and self-dependent girls from all over the world are going to descend on the shores of Ramchandi Beach this season. These girls are no Pushovers- they won’t take a beating lying down- they can take the fight back and win. They are no Damsels in Distress waiting for a Knight in Shining Armour to rescue them- they are their own protectors. They have invaded what were traditionally male domains and have excelled at that too. Carving their own identity and role in the Festival took some time but it was absolutely worth the time and effort.
Come, take part in the ISF and get a chance to have a look at how gender equations change for better. A quick look around the festival will give you innumerable examples of girl power.
