Shravana Amavasya is celebrated as Chitraka Parva in the Shri Mandira at Puri. Today the divine trinity of Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Jagannath are adorned with a head ornament called “Chitaa” made of gold, diamonds, and other precious stones. This day is therefore called “Chitaa Laagi Amavasya.”
Chitau Pitha is the specialty of the day – soaked rice and coconut are ground together for a delectable “pithaa” that is soft and fluffy and can be eaten plain or with a variety of toppings like soft jaggery, honey and caramelised grated coconut.
