Demonstration Multipurpose School (DMS), Bhubaneswar, was established in 1964, under then Regional College of Education (RCE), now Regional Institute of Education (RIE). The National Council of Education Research & Training (NCERT) was set up by Government of India at New Delhi in 1961 as an apex body to design and support a common system of education, national in character which would be the new method of secondary school education in the country. Four RCEs were set up by NCERT, at Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Mysore to cater the nearby states for pioneering work on producing trained teachers to carry forward the secondary school education in the country. Under each of the four RCEs a DM school was established to demonstrate the new secondary school curriculum designed and sponsored by NCERT, under a new board called Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Thus, these schools were the first in the country to implement the CBSE course.
